FAQ

Your questions, answered. Everything you need to know about how GameScrubber patches work.

The basics

? Why would I want a profanity filter?

Different players, different reasons. The ones we hear most: streamers and video creators who want to avoid platform language flags without bleeping or re-editing later; people playing with kids, parents, or roommates nearby who would rather not reach for headphones; and players who simply prefer less strong language in their games. A patch doesn't change anything else about how the game plays — it's just an optional way to experience it with the language toned down. If that's not for you, the original game is right there, untouched.

? Why filter the language but not the violence or other mature content?

Because language is the single category these patches set out to address — not because everything else is "fine." A profanity filter is exactly that: a filter for profanity. It doesn't try to make a mature game suitable for everyone, and we'd never claim it does. Players draw their lines in different places — some use gore filters, nudity filters, or scene-skip mods — and this is the same idea applied to language. Use it if that specific change is the one you're after.

? Isn't this just censorship?

We understand why the word comes up. The way we see it, nothing is taken away from anyone: the original game is still there exactly as the developer made it, and applying one of our patches is a choice you make on your own copy. It adds an option; it doesn't remove one — and you can restore your original files at any time. It's less "taking something out of the game" and more a content-preference toggle for the people who want it.

? Does this change or disrespect the developers' work?

We have real respect for the writing and performances in the games we patch — that work is entirely the developers'. A patch never touches the official game, rewrites its story, or changes it for anyone else; it's a local, optional edit you apply to your own installed copy and can undo whenever you like. Modding has always been a way for players to tailor a game to their own preferences, and this is that — applied to language.

? Is this legal?

GameScrubber patches are user-applied edits for games you legally own — we don't sell or host copies of any game; you bring your own installed copy. Most downloads include no game files at all; some include edited copies of game files that replace the matching files in your own installation, and each patch's page says which. How you use a patch is subject to that game's EULA and modding policy. We describe how our patches work; we don't offer legal advice.

? Do I need to own the game?

Yes, absolutely. The patch only modifies files from your own installed copy of the game. It will not work without the game installed. If you do not own the game yet, each patch page includes an affiliate purchase link.

Using the patches

? Does the filter change spoken voice lines, or just on-screen text?

It depends on the patch. Some cover on-screen text only — subtitles, journals, menus — while others also silence the matching words in the English voice-over, keeping the timing and the performance intact. Each patch's page spells out which surfaces it covers under "What was changed," so check there before you download.

? What languages does the filter cover?

English only. The patches find and filter English profanity; text and audio in other languages are left exactly as the game shipped them. If you play in another language, the filter won't have an effect.

? Can I choose which words are filtered?

Not at the moment. Each patch applies one consistent filter rather than a per-word toggle, because the edits are built into the game's dialogue, audio, and text rather than controlled by an in-game setting. We'd like to make filtering more configurable where it's practical, but it isn't something we can promise for every game.

? Will a patch conflict with my other mods?

It can, if another mod edits the same lines — most often a voice or dialogue-replacement mod. When two mods change the same voice line, whichever one your mod manager loads last usually wins, so you might hear that mod's version instead of the filtered one. The on-screen text side is generally unaffected. If you use a voice-replacement mod, try adjusting the load order and test a line you know is filtered. Any game-specific notes live on that patch's page.

? Will this break my game?

Patches are tested against the specific game version listed on each patch page. Check the "Supported Version" field before installing, and each page notes exactly what was changed and what was not. Most patches back up your original files automatically and tell you how to restore them — but it never hurts to keep your own backup before applying any patch.

? Will my game still work online?

It depends on the game. Many games with online components detect file modifications and may flag your installation. We note per-patch whether online play has been tested. Keep a backup of your original files before applying any patch.

? What happens when my game updates?

A game update may overwrite the patched files — if that happens, re-apply the patch. A big update can also change the game's files enough that some edits stop lining up, so if you notice missing or odd text after one, check the patch page for a refreshed version. Each patch page shows a "Last Verified" date and compatibility status. If the status shows "Outdated", re-verification is in progress — sign up for updates to be notified when it's ready.

About GameScrubber

? Do you use AI to make these patches?

Parts of the process are automated, and that includes AI tools — finding and matching language across many thousands of lines of dialogue, audio, and text by hand isn't realistic at this scale. Every patch is tested before release, and each one's page lists exactly what was changed and what wasn't, so you always know what you're applying. We're upfront about how the work gets done.

? Can you make a patch for a game that isn't listed?

Maybe — it depends on the game and whether a clean filter is technically possible for it. The best way to ask is the game-request form. We can't promise every request, and we can generally only patch games we own and can test, but every suggestion gets read.

? Do you remove other content, like gore or nudity?

No — these patches only filter language. Removing or changing other content is outside what they do, and often outside what's technically feasible for us. You may find dedicated mods from other authors for that kind of thing, but it isn't something GameScrubber makes.

? Are the patches really free?

Yes, always. All patches on GameScrubber are free to download and use. We are supported by optional Ko-fi donations and affiliate links (which never affect the patch itself). No accounts required.
